“You won't get any better! "fantastic"

Peter & Carolyn Solly

Stayed February 2015

If you want peace and tranquility, then look no further than "Evergreen Eco-lodge". My wife and I spent 8 days at the lodge and having had some 12 previous trips to the Gambia, the lodge goes to the top of our list. Greg and Maria are the perfect hosts and together with their staff of Ortense, Indie and Lamin, they ensure your stay is memorable. The food is amazing, very healthy and different each day. The large king size bed in the roundhouse had to be the most comfortable that we have ever slept in and the location just right. As I am a keen bird watcher (126 for the area) and my wife loves early morning walks, this is the perfect place to combine the two whilst being accompanied by their two friendly dogs "Tin Tin" and "Do Do". We will return.  Peter and Carolyn Solly

"Give yourself a real treat"

Judith & John Carpenter UK

Stayed January 2014

Give yourself a real treat. Spend a week [or more] in this idyllic holiday retreat; it is a little piece of paradise, especially for work-weary Europeans. We spent one week [not long enough] in March 2014. You’ll need a taxi from the airport or you’d never find it; it’s a kilometre from the nearest tarmac road along a sandy track; but the owners will arrange the taxi for you. In the “compound” we lived in an African roundhouse, constructed ecologically, from earth bricks and thatch, beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean; with the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in away from home. And if you fancy an afternoon snooze there are hammocks in a garden filled with flowers, shrubs and trees.

The owners, Maria and Greg, were on hand throughout our stay, careful to ensure that we had everything we needed but without being intrusive. We were given choices in food, enough breakfast to last all day and an evening meal freshly cooked. Maria is happy to cook really tasty vegetarian food and we alternated this with some delicious fish. Bottled beer and tonic water are in the fridge; help yourselves and chalk it   up on the board. The staff will bring you proper English tea on a tray in the morning and afternoon if you wish.

Evergreen is a gentle and interesting 25 minute walk from a beach, although Greg and Maria will drop you down there in the Landrover. The beach itself is out of your dreams. It spans around four kilometres with only fishermen [who were very friendly and generous] and a line of cows which promenaded up and down and ignored us; otherwise, splendid isolation and a warm bath of a sea in 30-34 degrees of heat.    Evergreen has a small beach shelter. You’ll need it in the midday heat.  We took up Greg’s offer to visit the Marcus Garvey Foundation in the local village, to which 10% of Evergreen’s profits are donated.  Well worth it! The children especially will be delighted to see you. Everyone is so friendly.

We spent a day on bicycles, exploring the local villages and one tourist beach – not our ‘thing’, before returning to the quiet sanity of Evergreen. Surprisingly, we became avid bird-watchers . There are more birds of varying colours, sizes and calls in Evergreen’s compound than we have ever experienced and the quiet early mornings, as the sun rose became a treat of sights and sounds we would never have believed.
We are returning to Evergreen for two weeks next year!
